The Brief
After many years without a decor update, the owners of this family home felt the space was tired, outdated, and in need of a complete facelift. Adjoining the kitchen, the family room serves as a central hub for relaxation, watching television, and socialising, while opening directly onto the garden and pool area. The clients wanted a fresh start, specifically seeking a calm, relaxed atmosphere that would bridge the two spaces and harmonise the aesthetic preferences of both partners.
The Design Strategy
To create a space that felt truly restorative, the design process began with applied colour psychology to determine how the family wanted to feel within their home.
- Harmonious Palette: A cohesive colour scheme was developed to flow effortlessly from the kitchen through to the family room. By unifying the wall tones across both spaces, visual barriers were removed, enhancing the natural light pouring in from the garden and pool doors.
- Emotional Wellbeing: Soft, light-reflecting hues were introduced to cultivate a tranquil, serene mood, grounding the high-traffic living area and making it an inviting sanctuary for evening relaxation.
- Balancing Preferences: Working closely with both members of the couple, the design carefully balanced their individual requirements, ensuring the room felt tailored to both tastes without compromise.
- Curated Furnishings: To maintain a sense of warmth and personal history, key treasured pieces were retained and re-contextualised alongside carefully selected new furniture to elevate the overall design.
The Result
The transformation breathed new life into the heart of the home. The flow between the kitchen, family room, and outdoor pool area now feels organic and effortless. Bright, airy, and beautifully balanced, the lighter palette successfully delivers the calm, relaxing sanctuary the clients desired—resulting in a fresh, uplifting space that both partners love to spend time in.
