Residential
Bespoke Farmhouse Kitchen Transformation
Location: Kent (AONB)
Project Type: Remodel & Extension
The Brief
We were invited to transform a dated farmhouse-style kitchen in a cherished family home that the client had recently inherited. The objective was twofold: to respect the property’s architectural history while introducing a highly bespoke, contemporary-classic aesthetic. The client envisioned an updated look with a seamless flow, specifically requesting that the existing Aga and the original chimney breast be thoughtfully integrated into the new layout rather than bypassed.
The Challenge & Spatial Reconfiguration
The original footprint felt restrictive and lacked the effortless movement required for modern living. To achieve a more intuitive flow, the project required significant structural choreography:
- Altering Circulation: We reconfigured the space by moving existing doorways to create more natural walkways.
- Opening the Core: The original chimney breast was structurally opened up, creating a striking visual axis and an open, through-view directly into the adjacent dining area. This instantly democratized the light and made the entire ground floor feel interconnected.
Craftsmanship & Material Palette
With the structural foundation set, we collaborated closely with the client to source the perfect artisan for the build. Together, we appointed a master joiner who proposed an exquisite, highly tailored material combination:
- The Cabinetry: Handcrafted, bespoke doors and units featuring striking birdseye maple accented by a delicate, precision-cut walnut inlay.
- The Surfaces: A premium granite worktop was selected to crown the cabinetry, its rich texture perfectly complementing and enhancing the natural, intricate beauty of the custom woodwork.
- The Heritage Anchors: The iconic Aga and newly opened chimney breast were seamlessly integrated, serving as a grounded, tactile anchor for the innovative joinery.
The Result
The finished kitchen is a testament to the power of thoughtful spatial design and collaborative craftsmanship. By moving away from the generic farmhouse style, the space was elevated into a entirely unique, functional work of art. The client was absolutely delighted with the transformation, inheriting not just a house, but a beautifully updated, bespoke family home tailored for the future.
