The Brief
This project involved the complete transformation of a compact, underutilised bathroom into a vibrant dual-purpose guest cloakroom and shower room. The original layout felt constrained, with a heavy, full-sized bath dominating the floor plan—a feature the owners found entirely superfluous to their daily needs and lifestyle.
Having spent part of their childhood living in Spain, the client held a deep, nostalgic connection to the warmth, light, and relaxed atmosphere of the Mediterranean. They wanted a space that transcended the standard, sterile guest cloakroom; the ambition was to create an uplifting, soul-nourishing room that instantly evoked memories of southern Spanish living while delivering high-functioning practicality for visiting guests.
The Design Strategy
To maximize the footprint and liberate valuable floor space, our first move was to remove the bulky bathtub, replacing it with a space-saving corner shower cubicle. This structural shift instantly opened up the floor plan, creating an easy, comfortable flow throughout the room.
Drawing on applied colour psychology and classic Mediterranean design traditions, every element was chosen to foster warmth and vitality:
- Moroccan Patterned Wall Tiles: Placed in key focal areas to bring authentic artisan pattern, narrative, and character to the walls.
- Warm Blue Porcelain Floor Tiles: Laid to anchor the scheme, their rich depth of colour providing a complementary, grounded base to the intricate wall tiles.
- Warm Turquoise Vanity Unit: A bespoke vanity unit was painted in a rich, warm turquoise, perfectly picking up and accentuating the vibrant turquoise tones within the patterned tiles for a cohesive visual story.
To complete the mood, ceramics, warm metalwork, and considered lighting were layered in, ensuring the room feels welcoming whether used as a quick daytime cloakroom or a relaxing shower space.
The Result
The transformation replaced a cramped, uninspired bathroom with an inviting, sun-drenched sanctuary that seamlessly balances its dual roles. As a guest cloakroom, it makes a memorable, joyful impression; as a shower room, it offers an effortless and practical experience.
By exchanging redundant fixtures for clever spatial planning and a colour palette rooted in personal nostalgia, the finished design proves that even the smallest room can deliver a powerful sense of warmth, beauty, and escape.
