A contemporary, flat-roofed Western Red Cedar garden room featuring sleek anthracite grey bi-fold doors and extensive glazing to maximize natural light and views of the surrounding garden.
The Challenge
As children grow into their teenage years, the need for independent social spaces becomes a priority. The clients required a multi-functional garden building that could seamlessly transition from a lively daylight hangout spot for a group of teenagers into a cozy, acoustically isolated media and movie room by night—all while complementing the aesthetics of a beautifully landscaped garden.
The Design Solution
Spatial Layout & Functionality
Inside, the cabin features a generous L-shaped sectional sofa positioned perfectly to optimize seating capacity for a group of friends while facing a dedicated media wall. A large floor-to-ceiling side window ensures the interior feels open and airy, avoiding any "shed-like" constraints.
Materiality & Integration
- Exterior Cladding: Premium vertical cedar tongue-and-groove cladding provides natural warmth, which will beautifully silver over time or can be treated to maintain its rich tones.
- Glazing & Hardware: High-performance aluminum framing in a bold anthracite finish creates a sharp, modern contrast against the warm timber.
- Landscaping Connection: The cabin is fronted by a smooth natural stone patio transition zone, seamlessly connecting the interior floor level to the gravel paths and lush rose borders of the garden.
Lighting & Ambience
Downlights integrated into the deep roof overhang provide a welcoming evening glow and practical task lighting for the patio area, while minimalist exterior wall sconces frame the structure, emphasizing its clean architectural lines after dark.
