The Garden Connection
From Conservatory to Open-Plan Living

The Challenge
The owners of this 1980s property were hindered by a common architectural dilemma: a traditional rear conservatory that was unusable for half the year—bitterly cold in winter and stiflingly hot in summer. As avid gardeners, our clients felt disconnected from their outdoor space and required a versatile, thermally efficient extension that would allow them to enjoy views of their landscape regardless of the season.
The Design Strategy
The objective was to replace the dated structure with a substantial open-plan family room that seamlessly integrated with the existing kitchen. Key design features included:
- Year-Round Thermal Comfort: By replacing the glass-roofed conservatory with a fully insulated solid-roof extension, we created a space with high thermal mass, ensuring a consistent and comfortable temperature throughout the year.
- Blurring Boundaries: To satisfy the desire for indoor-to-outdoor living, we installed expansive glazed doors. This provides an uninterrupted panoramic view of the garden and creates a direct, level-access transition to the patio, effectively making the garden an extension of the living room.
- A New Hub: The internal layout was reimagined to flow directly from the kitchen into a large, light-filled family zone, turning the back of the house into the primary social heart of the home.
The Result
The project has successfully bridged the gap between the interior home and the "outdoor room" the clients love so much. The once-neglected rear of the house is now a bright, modern, and energy-efficient space. Whether they are hosting family gatherings or enjoying a quiet coffee overlooking the lawn on a rainy afternoon, the homeowners now have the year-round garden connection they envisioned.
